The temple, or Wat Pong Sunan as the former name, is also a place where a Lord Buddha statue with the lying-down manner is located. Therefore, if you’re looking for a temple where you can pay respect to this type of Lord Buddha statue, then Pong Sunan temple is a good choice.
Pong Sunan temple was once abandonded. However, in the year 1929, it was renovated by Luang Pongpibul and Lady Sunanta. That’s the reason why the temple’s name was later changed into ‘Wat Pong Sunan’. It is the synthesis between the names of both people.
Beside of the Lord Buddha statue of the lying-down manner, there are still many other interesting architectures at the temple.
- The ubosot : This is where ‘Phra Chao San Suk’, a Marnwichai Lord Buddha statue is stored. This statue is over 568 years old. You will want to pay respect to this too.
- The white vihara : This vihara is completely white. It consists of many minor pointy white pagodas.
- The pagoda : This is the main pagoda of the temple, which is covered in golden color. Inside, there are the Lord Buddha’s relics. The relics were directly import from India long time ago, in order to be worshipped by villagers.
- Phra Chao Tan Chai : This is a Lord Buddha statue standing on a white vihara. This statue is also a highlight of the temple. It is believed that, if you put your forehead on the forefinger of the statue and make a wish, your wish can come true. Well, in that case, you may want to make a wish that can bring happiness to your family.
How to get there
Wat Pong Sunan temple is located on Kam Lue Road, Nai Wiang District, Muang County, Phrae Province.
To get there, just follow the Highway No.1023 until you reach Kam Lue Road. Just continue straight. Then, just before Soi Kam Lue 1, you will find the temple or you can contact travel agency in Chiang Mai and Phrae to arrange the private tour package or the car rental with driver for you.
Opening hours and Entrance fee : Opens daily from 6 am until 5 pm. Admission is free.
