Wat Jong Kham and Wat Jong Klang are just like twin temples

Wat Jong Kham and Wat Jong Klang are a symbol of Mae Hong Son.

Wat Jong Kham and Wat Jong Klang are an invaluably ancient temple of Mae Hong Son town. Built by proficient Thai Yai people, then artfully extraordinary Thai Yai works of art. The temples are set within the same grounds. Both are found on southern Chong Klang Lake and when the sun reflects their images onto the water the effect is awe inspiring.

Wat Jong Kham

Wat Jong Kham is the oldest temple of Muang Mae Hong Son. It was built nearly 200 years ago by Thai Yai (Shan people), who make up about half of the population of Mae Hong Son Province. The prominent architectural point of this temple is the 9-layer roof in the castle style.

Wat Jong Kham was originally built in 1827 by Tai Yai artisans during the rule of Phraya Singharat Racha, the fist governor of Mae Hong Son. Unfortunately, the original wooden temple buildings were damaged by a fire in 1970 and much of what can be seen today is a reconstruction. There are still some fine examples of workmanship with the metal fretwork that the Tai Yai are renowned for and it remains an attractive temple to stroll around and enjoy the views of the lake and mountains beyond.

An important religious place in this temple is Vihara Lung Por Tho (Large Buddha statue). The temple houses a large Buddha statue with a lap width of 4.85 meters cast by Burmese craftsmen in 1926. The principal statue is another statue which is a replica of the statue in Wat Suthat in Bangkok.

Wat Jong Klang

Next, walk a little more at Wat Jong Klang. Features a pagoda style is beautifully decorated by the Mon form of Shan. Behind the chedi is a large rambling open-fronted wiharn. Within the wiharn are many altars and throne-like pulpits used by the monks of the temple when giving sermons. To the right of the altar, three walls are completely covered with small paintings on glass depicting the previous lives of the Lord Buddha before birth and biography of the prince Sidhadha(the Jakata). The paintings are more than 100 years old and were bought from Mandalay in Burma.

In a room behind the paintings is a collection of small wooden ‘dolls’ also bought from Burma. A museum in which the display difficult to see the antiques.
