The Bhubing Palace or Winter Palace

The Bhubing Palace is located on Doi Buak Ha, Muang District, Chiang Mai Province. It is the royal winter residence in Chiang Mai where the Royal family stays during seasonal visits to the people in the northern part of Thailand.

The palace is also the royal guesthouse for prominent state visitors from abroad. In the past Their Majesties welcomed or granted royal audience to State visitors only in the capital of Bangkok. Bhubing Palace was built in 1961. The construction started initially with only the royal resident building and the guesthouse. The other buildings were additionally built on later dates.

Phra Tamnak Bhubing Rajanives was built in northern Thai architectural style called Ruen Mu (Group of Houses). The building sits on stilts. The upper floor is the royal residential area while the ground floor houses the royal entourage.

The building master plan was design by Prince Samaichalerm Kridagara while Mom Rachawongse Mitrarun Kasemsri designed the building.

The construction of the Palace was undertaken by the Crown Property Bureau, under the supervision of Prince Samaichalerm Kridagara, assisted by Mom Mom Rachawongse Mitrarun Kasemsri and Mr. Pradit Yuwapukka. General Luang Kampanath Saenyakorn, the Privy Councilor was assigned to lay foundation stone on August 24, 1961 at 10.49 am. The Construction took 5 months to complete. The first royal visitors to stay at the palace were King Federick the Ninth and Queen Ingrid of Denmark on their royal visit to Thailand in January 1962

Ruen Peek Mai (Log cabin)

Ruen Peek Mai (Log cabin) is the seasonal residence of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn and also the royal guesthouse.

Ruen Rab Rong

Ruen Rab Rong (Royal Guesthouse), a two-storey building built in modern Thai style is being used as the guesthouse for royal visitors and senior palace aides and members of the royal entourage. It is also the waiting place for those who are granted a royal audience or invited to attend the royal banquets.

The Bhubing Palace

Pha Mon Pavilion and Fern Garden Originally a small hill covered with existing plants and trees where a hill-tribe style thatch-roofed bamboo hut was built for royal recreation and informal dinner. A teak wood pavilion was later built in place of the bamboo hut.

The Fern Garden was started in 1993 when various indigenous varieties of ferns were collected and planted in harmony with the natural surroundings. Some of the ferns, tree ferns of cyatheaceae family are as old as 60-100 years.

Water Reservoir

Water Reservoir is a vast water catchment to reserve water for use at Bhubing Palace. On one side of the reservoir stands a teak woods gazebo. Along the bank of the reservoir, it is lavishing with landscaped gardens of temperate flowering plants in formal and informal styles. There is the musical Fountain called “The Fountain of Celestial Water of People”.

Phra Tamnak Siri Song Nakornbing

Phra Tamnak Siri Song Nakornbing is commonly called “Phra Tamnak Eucalyptus”, built according to the royal instruction of Her Majesty the Queen who wished to study the use of eucalyptus wood in construction of buildings. It was a log cabin built by a military engineering company from the Third Army Division. The design was by Mr.Kitti Kupatavinij architect who also supervised the construction work that started on 5 September 1991. The foundation stones were laid by General Prem Tinasulanonda, the Privy Councilor who acted on the royal instruction on 12 September 1991. The construction was completed in January 1992.

Phra Tamnak Payak Sathit is another log cabin built with eucalyptus wood. Her Majesty the Queen had it built as a seasonal residence to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn. It was built in 1993 under the supervision of Mr.Kitti Kupatavinij, the architect and designer of the building.

Phra Tamnak Phrueksa Wisuthikhun is a double floor building with a basement, located on hill, built in mixed Thai architectural styles of the North and Central Thailand. It was once the royal residence of the late HRH Princess Sri Nagarindra the Princess Mother who was occasionally accompanied by HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra. It was designed by Mom Rachawongse Mitrarun Kasemsri.

How to get there 

From Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, it cost around 40 THB to go up to Bhubing Palace via the red truck.  If you need more comfortable to visit at Doi Suthep area, we recommend you to book the private tour with us for all place or If you are traveling on a budget, we can provide a budget tour to you as well.

Entrance fee & opening hours :  Bhubing Palace entrance tickets could only be bought from 8.30am to 11.30am and from 1pm to 3.30pm. The admission is 50 THB per person 

Dress Code: Conservative with long pants and covered shoulders.
