Huai Hom Karen Village is in Mae Hong Son. It is inhabited by the ethnic Karen people, with the care of Project Development Centre, of course.
The village looks like the scenes from the movie ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’. It means, that’s so beautiful. Hills, grass, trees, and little houses are all around. The air is clean and fresh.
There are a lot of activities waiting for you there. You can have a sightseeing for a first thing, walking around the village and take a lot of photos. See how villagers live their lives, how they work. These people live their lives in a simple way and still attach their minds to their original culture. They are cute and friendly. Don’t be awkward. Next, you will want to see sheep fur fabric. The villagers weave it. Long time ago, Queen Sirikit traveled to Ban Huai Hom and wanted everybody to weave the fabric. Her Majesty believed that it would be a good alternate career for the villagers. The Queen told the authorities to import exotic sheeps, in order to get sheep fur of the finest quality. That has done good to the villagers until now. Sheep fur fabric has been created into many types of usages, for examples, scarf, table cloth, etc.
Beside, there is the very highlight of the village, coffee plantations. Yes. The Huai Hom Karen Village grow a countless amount of coffee plants. These plants are used to make fresh cups of coffee. Or, to be precise, Arabica coffee is the star. The village is well-known for this kind of coffee. The perfect quality in guaranteed.
If you want to have time to see all of these longer, you may spend some nights at the village. You can book a shelther and be charged for 150 Baht. You can have delicious local meals and hire a tour guide to take you around.
How to get there
The village is located in Mae La Noi County, Mae Hong Son Province. Drive along the Highway No.108(Chiangmai-Mae Hong Son’. You should pass Mae Sariang first. Then, when you reach the 132nd kilometre, you have to turn right and switch to the path No.1266 instead. Lastly, you continue for another 30 kilometres to find your destination.
