Wat Phrathat Mae Chedi: ‘See the museum of ancient items and amulets.’
Many temples are not ordinary temples. That means, they don’t just consist of chedis, ubosots, or viharas, but they also consist of small museums or little communities.
Have you ever seen any of temples like these? If not, then let’s visit one. By doing so, you will learn many things, both religious and lifestyle.
If you don’t know which one you should go, then how about ‘Wat Phrathat Mae Chedi’?
Wat Phrathat Mae Chedi is another interesting temple in Chiang Rai, which there is a museum of ancient items and amulets inside. The museum is the main highlight of the temple. The abbot established it, in order that later generations of people will have their chances of learning history. There are many exhibitions within the museum. All of them are really old, rare, and valuable. Some of them came from the exploration of an abandoned temple. Some of them are even donated items from monks and villagers. You don’t want to miss this museum for sure. If you miss it, you don’t arrive at the temple at all.
Inside the museum, there are something like ancient pots, bowls, vases, and glorious Buddha statues. Just see them with your own eyes.
Tour the museum carefully. Don’t touch anything or you may break the exhibitions.
After finishing museum touring, you may continue with other zones of the Phrathat Mae Chedi temple. First off all, you can take a sightseeing around, as the temple is located in the middle of greenery, which cause a nice atmosphere. You will inhale the sweet air into your lungs. You can take photos of yourself with the temple. But don’t forget to act properly and always respect the place.
No matter which part of the temple you walk to, you will always see beautiful trees and clear sky all around you. Therefore the temple is a good place for mind relaxing.
Then, let’s move to the Chedi Sri Wichai. You can reach it by following the path behind the ubosot. Keep walking for about 200 metres and you will find a square-based chedi. The chedi was built by Kruba Sri Wichai.
Next, if you walk a little bit further, you will see many statues of Kruba Sri Wichai and other Buddhist monks being stored in a small house.
That’s not the end of that. The temple area is a woodland. Therefore all architectures are scattered around. You will have to be patient and walk from A to B, in order to see them all. On some spots of the woodland, Buddha statues are located.
Finally, you will want to see ‘Wang Matcha’, which is actually a large pond with millions of fishes. (*** The word ‘matcha’ means ‘fish’ in English and ‘wang’ means ‘palace’. Long story short, the pond is like a palace of fishes.)
At Wang Matcha, you can feed the fishes if you want to. Just buy a bag of fish food for a small amount of money. If you don’t feed them, you will not have to pay for anything, as there is no admission fee. But if you drive a car, you will have to pay for 20 Baht.
You can visit the temple from 7:00-17:00. For further details, you may call 053-602732.
How to get there
Wat Phrathat Mae Chedi is located at Ban Mae Chedi, Wiang Pa Pao County, Chiang Rai Province.
If you have a personal car, you can reach the temple by just following the route Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai to get into Wiang Pa Pao County.
Or, if you don’t have a personal car, you can take a bus instead. There are some bus lines for you to choose, probably Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai, or Chiang Rai-Mae Kha Chan. If you want to take any of these buses, you have to be extra punctual, as these buses are strictly arranged on time schedules. That means, if you are late, you will not catch your bus right on time. These buses can get you to Wiang Pa Pao County, but can not get you all the way up to the temple. You will have to walk on your feet, if your body can take that. Or you will have to hire some other vehicle to give you a ride instead. Most hotels and travel agency in Chiang Mai will be able to assist in booking a private car.
