Speaking of cave, or beautiful caves, there are so many of these in Thailand, including in Mae Hong Son. All caves are natural, mysterious, but safe and interesting. Don’t know which one to choose? Then take Mae Lana Cave as your consideration.

Mae Lana cave is the longest cave in Thailand. It’s about 12 kilometres long. If you want to complete the whole walking around this cave, it takes about 10 hours or even more.

The atmosphere of the cave is not too dark or too bright. There is water flowing. Best of all, stalactites can be seen around from A to B, same as some rocks. Therefore, if you want to walk into the cave, you need to dress properly. Try to wear shoes instead of slippers, as you may trip over a rock and injure yourself. A pair of boots will also do it. For clothes, a T-shirt and a pair of trousers should be best. They can prevent you from getting too wet.

To get inside the cave, you should hire a tour guide to be with you, in case you don’t know your way. Also, don’t forget to bring a flashlight. You need to be in perfect health, this is the most important fact. If you have a heart disease,bone disease, or some other dangerous disease, you should be in a trip like this.

There are two separate program for you to explore the cave. Choose the one that fits you most.

  • The 4-hour program : With this one, you will have to walk for about 2.5 kilometres. You will have to get a little bit wet, as you must walk through the water.
  • The one-day program : You will explore the cave for one whole day. You will walk for about 5 kilometres. This one is quite hard, because you will need to go through the darkness of the cave. You should have a good eyesight.

The best season for you to get to the cave, is during winter and dry season. If you travel during other seasons, the water level may be too high and the entrance of the cave may be blocked off.

How to get there

Mae Lana Cave is located at Ban Mae Lana, Pang Ma Pha District, Pang Ma Pha County, Mae Hong Son Province.

Use the Highway No. 1095. Head for the heart of Mae Hong Son. Keep going until you reach the 152nd kilometre, where you will see a junction. Turn left to switch to the Highway No.1126 instead. Keep driving for about 6 kilometres. Then turn right and continue for the last 1 kilometre. Ban Mae Lana should be in your eyesight from then on.
