Doi Luang Chiang Dao Trek: ‘Getting an exercise by having a sky-high sightseeing.’
Going hiking may be a new experience for you. In case you’re interested in it but you don’t know where to go, then here is your suggestion.
Let’s pack your things and go hiking at Doi Luang Chiang Dao!
Doi Luang Chiang Dao is the third highest mountain in Thailand, located in Chiang Dao County, Chiang Mai Province. Its is about 2,275 metres higher than the sea level. Mainly, the mountain consists of limestone. However, long time ago, Doi Luang was possibly a sea area. After all aqua animals had died, their ash gathered each other and turn into a mountain, as you see nowadays. Now, Doi Luang Chiang Dao is a beautiful place with greenery around.
Doi Luang Chiang Dao itself isn’t a single mountain, but it consists of many other mountains too, for examples, Doi Pyramid, Doi Sam Phee Nong, Doi Nok, all of which are higher than 2,000 metres.
Before starting your hiking trip, you may want to walk up to Doi Kew Lom Mountaintop of Doi Luang Dao Mountaintop for a little sightseeing. The scenery at that high is truely amazing. You must want to see it at least once in lifetime, especially during the sunrise and sunset. If you want to see the sunrise, you should go to Doi Kew Lom Mountaintop. But if you want to see the sunrise, you should visit Doi Luang Mountaintop. Thise should be best.
Now that you finish your sightseeing, let’s move on to going on a hiking trip. At Doi Luang Chiang Dao, there 2 different nature-exploring paths available for tourists. Just choose your favourite one.
- Den Yah Chad-Ang Saloong Path : The whole path is about 8.5 kilometres long. But there is a night-spending spot on the way, don’t worry. Just get your stuffs ready and go on. However, if you choose this path, you need a vehicle to drop you off at the walking spot, or you are gonna have to walk a long long way.
- Pang Wua-Ang Saloong Path : Almost as same as the first path, it also has a night-spending spot. Only Pang Wua-Ang Saloong Path is 6.5 kilometres long. The starting point is at Dong Phai Hok and the ending point is at Ang Saloong. Just park your car, if you have one, at Chiang Dao County Office.
But, not everyone can go hiking on a mountain. People who do this must be in perfect health. Those who have heart diseases or bone diseases should avoid, or their conditions will get worse. Remember, going on a mountain is not an easy task, as a mountain is steep and its path is quite rough.
Here are other suggestions for whoever want to go to Doi Luang Chiangdao, probably for a hiking trip or whatever. These suggestions should be followed, in order that everyone, including you, can have the most wonderful trips ever.
- As Doi Luang Chian Dao is very enormous, you may not be able to tour the whole area in just one day. Therefore, if you wish to see everything, you should spend at least one night at Doi Luang Chiangdao, in order to feel no tired and complete your plan.
- You better hire a tour guide with you, if you have never been to Doi Luang Chiangdao before, so that you won’t get lost.
- The amount of tourists for each round of hiking at Doi Luang Chiangdao is limited. In one round, only 150 tourists are allowed. The rest will have to wait for the next round. Therefore, you should plan your hiking trip ahead and contact the rangers to book a round. After your booking is complete, you will get a license from the rangers.
- Ang Saloon is the only camping spot at Doi Luang Chiangdao, so don’t get out of the way.
- You have to get foods, water, blankets, pillows, and any other necessary items for yourself, as you can’t find any of these on Doi Luang Chiangdao.
- Always keep the area clean. Don’t drop trash on the ground.
- Do not set up a fire to incinerate your trash, because that will be dangerous and can pollute the natural resources around the area.
- Do not disturb your camping friends by making noise or behaving badly.
Lastly, here are admission fees and service fees for tourists.
- Admission fee: 200 Baht per one person
- Car-included admission fee: 30 Baht per one car
- Tent Setup Fee: 30 Baht per one day
- Trash Deposit: 600 Baht per one tour group
How to get there
Start your engine and follow the Highway No.107. Keep going for about 72 kilometres. Then you should reach the junction that lead you to Ban Tham Chiangdao. Yes. You’re heading for the right direction. Just continue straight for about 7 kilometres and that’s it! You should see a parking area. Let’s park your car there and start to look for a vehicle that will give you a ride to the walking spot of Doi Luang Chiang Dao.

Hello,
With my friend we would like to hike Doi Luang Chiang Dao to the sommet in 1 Day with a guide, in november. What do we have to do to make it possible? Where can we do the reservation? Can we do it online? We are 2 adults
Thank you for your response.
Dear, Patricia
We used to manage the trekking to Doi Luang Chiang Dao Hill Top in the past, sir.
But after the Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary manage a new rule for doing the trekking reservation through them directly only which is not allow for the tour company. Hence, we have to cancel the trip.
We are really sorry for this inconvenient cause. 🙏
The trekking trip is 2 days 1 night be managed by the Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary and they will open the booking in October (Around 5 days) in each year and booking through their website only on the link below.
